Two years later he was apprenticed under the celebrated ciseleur, Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813), from whom he acquired the art of fine chasing and gilding of bronzes.

He started to work for Pierre Gouthiere, sculptor-founder of the King, and collaborated in the mid-1770s with Louis Prieur.

He had received his training in the workshop of Pierre Gouthiere, the outstanding Parisian ciseleur-doreur working in the Louis XVI style, before establishing his own shop in 1776.
