Monumental Fireplace Signed by Jules Allard and Louis Ardisson

About the Item

Located in the hall of a ballroom, this exceptional fireplace welcomed the 80 guests of Edward Julius Berwind's luxurious New York home in the Louis XV style. It attests to the true Golden Age of architectural and decorative splendor imported from France to the United States. Built in 1894, it is the result of a collaboration between Jules Allard & Fils and Louis Ardisson. It is composed of a great wealth of noble materials including bronze (gilded and with a green patina), statuary marble from Carrara and purple breccia marble. An atlantean and a caryatid in gilded bronze and green patina are placed on either side of the opening to the hearth. These two enveloped figures rest on a double bronze lion's paw and respond to each other in their movement and pageantry. Between the two, the mantel holds a cast iron plate with the coat of arms of France. The two tones of marble in the mantel are found in the hearthstone on the floor. The two caryatids support a bas-relief on the lintel representing winter, created by Louis Ardisson. The superb mantel is topped by a mantel where the bas-relief "The Triumph of Neptune" in Carrara marble and its frame in breccia marble adorned with bronze pieces are combined. At the top, two putti frame a white marble cartouche with the initials of the owner "EJB".
