It is presented here rebound in ¼ brown leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling and titles to the spine, and a new cloth archival slipcase. The History of the Discovery of America by Henry Trumbull is a historical work focused on the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth Rock and their early interactions with indigenous nations in New England. It includes accounts of notable engagements, culminating in the "final subjugation of the natives in 1679." The book also covers important engagements with Native Americans further west, including defeats of Generals Braddock, Harmer, and St. Clair, the Capture of Capt. Boone, as well as the Creek and Seminole Wars in Florida. Originally written by Henry Trumbull under the pen name, "Rev. James Steward,” this later 1832 edition features his real name. Issued in several iterations, the first established publication dates to 1810, however the book was frequently reissued through the 1820s, 30s, and 40s, with the title later changing to History of the Indian Wars. It was a very popular and widely read account in its time. This edition features two illustrations, “King Philip” and “Milly Francis entreating her Father to spare the life of an American Captive.” The illustrations are lightly hand-colored with a watercolor wash. CONDITION: 8vo, Rebound in ¼ brown leather and cloth, raised bands, gilt tooling and gilt titles to the spine. Interior pages are toned, with foxing, and light to moderate staining throughout. Illustrated with two plates, lightly hand-colored. Lacking the engraved folding frontispiece. 256 pages. Presented with an archival slipcase. Howes T-370; Sabin 97192.
