The Italian Lamp: 1945-1985 A Collection

About the Item

Catalog of a pioneering exhibition of postwar Italian lighting collected by Philip Cutler of New York and Ingrid Zerunian of Vienna, with assistance from Italian architect and designer Paola Navone of Milan. Held at Furniture of the Twentieth Century in New York City from October 10-November 15, 1985. An early exploration of this topic billed as the first major American exhibition to focus on this highly important segment of Italian design and manufacture—and still one of the most ambitious and comprehensive such efforts to date. The portfolio catalog contains 101 loose sheets showcasing 91 lamps, either out-of-production vintage examples or unique prototypes. Color-coded into sections titled The Lamps of the 50’s; The Lamps of the 60’s; Lamps of the Avant-garde of the Years 60-70; Lamps of the 70’s; and The Lamps of the Neoavangarde. Features a presciently well-edited and curated selection of modernist and Radical lighting designs by a who’s who of postwar Italian design: Achille and Piergiocomo Castiglioni; Luigi Caccia Dominioni; Gio Ponti; Claudio Salocchi; Rudy Righi; Vinicio Vianello; Gino Sarfatti; Gaetano Scolari; Vittorio Vigano; Roberta Bianchi; Alessandro Pianon; Joe Colombo; Stoppino/Meneghetti/Gregotti; Umberto Riva; Francesco Buzzi Ceriani; Elio Martinelli; Gae Aulenti; Alfredo Pizzo Greco; Eleonore Peduzzi Riva; Hans Jurgen Fisher; Studio Tetrarch; Superstudio; Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Citta Nuova; Sergio Asti; Vico Magistretti; Cini Boeri; Mario Bellini; Gianfranco Frattini/Livo Castiglioni; Annig Sarian; Marcello Pietrantoni/Roberto Lucci; Eugenio Carmi; Ettore Sottsass; Gino Marotta; Archizoom; Adalberto Dal Lago; Studio Abaco; Mazza/Gramigna; De Pas/D’Urbino/Lamazzi; Carmellini Rizzonico; Alchimia; Riccardo Dalisi; and UFO (Lapo Binazzi). Small vertical 8vo (4 3/4” x 8 3/4”) in pictorial paper slipcase with 101 mimeographed loose sheets each with a b/w rendering of a lamp along with curatorial information (name, designer, manufacturer, year of design, dimensions). With text by Paola Navone. Catalog and drawings by Sean Brennan. A valuable and highly scarce resource for identifying and documenting esoteric postwar Italian lighting design. Complete.

Graffiti: The Auction
Located in New York, NY
Exhibition catalog for an auction of graffiti art held at Guernsey’s on June 14-15, 2000. Square 8vo (8.75” x 8.75”), printed wrappers, 144 pages, fully illustrated, primarily in color. While the cover title (Graffiti: The Auction) might in other circumstances be considered hyperbole, in this case it was merely descriptive, as this landmark auction was the first dedicated solely to graffiti. It featured work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, KAWS, BLADE, Lady Pink, Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant, Kenny Scharf, Phase 2, and a host of others. While the auction itself fell well short of financial expectations, the exhibition was deemed extraordinary (see the review by art historian Alan Moore...
