A fine FIRST EDITION ELEPHANT FOLIO of Jame's Paine monumental work:
Plans, Elevations and Section of Noblemen and Gentlemen's Houses, and also of Stabling, Bridges, Public and Private, Temples, and other Garden Buildings; Executed in the Counties of Derby, Durham, Middlesex, Northumberland, Nottingham, and York. ... Part the First

First Edition. Elephant folio, 20 1/8 x 14 inches (512 x 356 mm), title, deidication, iv + susbcriber and plate lists, 20 pp plate descriptions; 55 engraved plates numbered 1-74 (the 15 double-page and 4 folding plates each with two plates numbers) by J. June, H. Mackworth, P. Mazell, J. Miller, T. Morris, J.S. Müller, F. Patton and T. White after designs by Paine. Half bound in tan calf with dry stamped decorative borders; boards covered in red and blue marbled paper, edges bumped and worn, boards rubbed; penicl notations inside front cover. Paper generally clean and supple with occasional foxing; binding tight.

An imposing and elegant elephant folio comprising some of James Paine's most important works. Featuring designs for completed buildings, mostly in the Palladian style including Sandbeck, Axwell, and the magnificent stables at Chatsworth. The plates and text describe buildings in the counties of Derby, Durham, Middlesex, Northumberland, Nottingham and York. The second part including the interiors of some of the same buildings and also covering buildings in several other counties was not published until 1783.
The architect JAMES PAINE (1717-1789) was a neo-classicist whose designs include Chatsworth, Sandbeck, and Axwell Park among many others. He was a favourite architect of the powerful Catholic families of the time and he held various posts in the Office of Works, the entity that oversaw the building and maintenance of the royal castles and residences.

London: W. & S. Jones, 1813. Fourth Edition. Two volumes, 8vo, 9 x 5 3/4 in. (228 x 145 mm). Text volume: pp. frontispiece, xii, 534, [16] ads; Plates vol.: pp. title page and 34 folding plates. Previous owner's name penned on the first free flyleaf. Uniform contemporary paper-covered boards, untrimmed, housed in a felt-lined custom clamshell box, 9 x 5 1/2 in. Occasional browning to the edges of some of the plates in Vol. 2, 1/2 inch tear to fold of Pl. VIII and 1 inch tear to the edge of Pl XIV, none of these minor flaws affecting the images. Frontispiece "The Great Theodolite, by Ramsden, Used by the late Gen.l Roy &c. in the great English Trigonometrical Operations." This is the "Fourth Edition, corrected and enlarged by William Jones, F. Am. P. S.

The last chapter of these fascinating volumes includes conversion tables to various standard national measure ranging from the Paris foot to the Russian archine, to the Venice braccio, the Egyptian stadium to 'The mathematical foot of China'.
GEORGE ADAMS the younger (1750–1795) was an English scientist, optician and scientific writer. In politics Adams was a Tory, and as such was received with favour at court by George III, who made him his official mathematical instrument maker, succeeding his father George Adams in the post. George III was personally interested in instruments and had Adams produce items for him exclusively, many in silver. This is Gilpin's third in his series of works tracing picturesque beauty in British natural landscapes. In it he portrays the landscapes of Scottish Highlands, and describes them lyrically in his text. Prefacing the list of Prints at the end of the second volume, the author says "With regards to the prints, which adorn these volumes, I can only say..... that few of them pretend to be 'exact portraits.' They in general 'only characterize the countries,' through which the reader is carried." The illustrations, based on Gilpin's sketches, were etched by his nephew William Sawrey Gilpin using the newly invented aquatint process.
