L'Annonciateur by Auguste Villiers de L'Isle-Adam – in special Art-Deco binding

About the Item

A rare and stunning binding sculpted in the Art-Nouveau style by Louis Déze, and illustrating the themes of the work. From the library of the eminent French bibliophile Guy Bigorie. Paris: A. Ferroud, 1905. LIMITED EDITION. Illustrations by Louis-Édouard Fournier. 12mo. 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. (182 x 120 mm); pp. (iv), 45, (2); rubricated title page with tissue guard. Ten in-text etchings on drawings by Louis-Édouard Fournier, engraved by Xavier Lesueur, each with tissue guard; paper covers bound in. Bound in brown calf, blind tooled with repoussé technique on front cover, a series of figures in a decorative frame, on the back cover a human head with angel wings, signed on the bottom left, in the tooling, by L. Dézé (Louis Dézé); gilt title and blind tooling on spine; marbled end-papers and gilt dentelles and gilt edges; t.e.g., rest uncut. Marbled paper chemise and marbled board slipcase. Copy 342 of 350 printed, and one of 200 on velin d'Arches. From the library of GUY BIGORIE: Small ticket with GB initials pasted on the inside front cover. (Carteret III, page 139; BNF31584740). Jean-Marie-Mathias-Philippe-Auguste, comte de Villiers de l'Isle-Adam (7 November 1838 – 19 August 1889) was a French symbolist writer. This story, is the last and functions as the epilogue of the "Contes Cruels," a collection of 28 stories published in different journals and first collected in a single volume under this title in 1883. His friend Stéphane Mallarmé wrote in a letter to his friend Villiers: "You have put into this work a sum of extraordinary Beauty. Truly the language of a God everywhere! Many of the short stories have a prodigious lyricism that no others will attain: all of them amazing. » (Letter cited in the introduction to the 1983 Gallimard, Folio edition).
