This is an antique copy of Pleasures of Memory by Samuel Rogers. An English, hard bound collection of poetry, published in London in the Georgian period, 1803. A contemporary of Wordsworth, Byron and other Romantic poets, Samuel Rogers (1763 - 1855) was a successful banker and art collector, who was also one of England's most celebrated poets during his lifetime. Rogers was invited to be Poet Laureate on the occasion of Wordsworth's death 1850, but declined due to his age. Considered one of the great sources of social documentary of London's artistic and literary world of the 18th and early 19th century, he lived to the age of 92 - astonishing for the era. A controversial figure in later life, the Marquis of Stafford, George Granville Leveson-Gower - 1st Duke of Sutherland (1758 - 1833) was a patron of the arts, landowner, politician, diplomat and at times, the richest man in Britain. As part of the Leveson-Gower family of nobility, George was related to Dukes and Earls across the nation. Educated in Westminster and at Christ Church, Oxford, the later Marquis of Stafford was the Member of Parliament for Newcastle-Under-Lyme from 1779 - 1784 and the county of Staffordshire from 1787 - 1799. He also held positions as an Ambassador to France during their revolutionary years and held various other posts until his passing.
