These volumes were published by Doubleday & Co. as a Special Kansas City Edition limited to 20,615 copies of volume I and only 11,500 copies of volume II. This set was later signed and dated by Truman. The signature reads "From Harry Truman 2-8-67" on a slip added before the half title page. This matching set retains the original publisher's black boards featuring Truman's facsimile silver embossed signature on the front boards. The front end pages of each volume have a red and white map of Missouri. Both volumes are presented together in a new custom archival slipcase. Harry S. Truman served as U.S. President during one of the most pivotal times in the nation’s history. Not wanting the position at first, Vice President Truman was handed the responsibility after Franklin D. Roosevelt suddenly passed away in office. The 33rd president told the press that, “I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.” In the midst of WWII, Truman had to make momentous decisions despite never even being briefed on major topics like the atomic bomb while FDR was president. In his memoirs, Truman provides his readers with a firsthand account of his years as President of the United States. The first of the two volumes, 1945: Year of Decisions, focuses on how he navigated the tumultuous political climate as a new president. With the Second World War coming to a high point, especially in the Pacific Theater, Truman explains his decision to use atomic weapons for the first time in history, destroying Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For a moment in time, President Truman and the United States was the undisputed military superpower in the world and this memoir explains how Truman navigated that political and moral sea. That same year, Truman helped to found the United Nations, and worked with his colleagues to attempt to create a better world despite tensions already rising with other nations. The second of the two volumes, 1946-52: Years of Trial and Hope, continue Truman’s personal account on the extraordinary issues the world faced post-WWII. This second novel describes a world suddenly equipped with atomic weapons and the men who had the power to use them. Throughout the book, Truman explains his role in the Cold War, the Truman Doctrine, the Berlin Airlift, the creation of Israel, and the beginnings of the Korean War. The years immediately following WWII proved to be a tense era relying solely on political relations between a handful of leaders. As president during this time, Truman provides an invaluable account of not only the events but the reasoning behind the actions of a man who was central to everything. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Original publisher's black boards with silver embossed facsimile signature, and blue and silver titles to the spine. Deckled edge. Red Missouri map endpapers. Breakfast at Tiffany's, Signed by Truman Capote, First Edition, 1958
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Capote, Truman. Breakfast at Tiffany's: A short novel and three stories. New York: Random House, 1958. First edition, first issue printing. Signed by Truman Capote. In the original publisher’s orange first issue dust jacket and yellow cloth binding. Presented with an archival clamshell case. This is a signed, first edition, first issue of Truman Capote's classic novella chronicling the adventures of the free-spirited Holly Golightly, Breakfast at Tiffany's. In addition to the title novella, the book also includes three other short stories: House of Flowers, A Diamond Guitar, and A Christmas Memory. The book is issued its first issue dust jacket with the 10/58 date code one the front flap. "First Printing" is stated on the copyright page and the book signed by the author “Truman Capote” on the front flyleaf. Capote originally sold his story Breakfast at Tiffany's to Harper's Bazaar for $2,000, with intended publication in its July 1958 issue. Shortly after the publication was scheduled, Harper's editor Carmel Snow was ousted by the magazine's publisher, the Hearst Corporation, and Hearst executives began asking for changes to the novella's language as there was concern that Tiffany's & Co., a major advertiser, would react negatively. The story was removed from the Harper’s Bazzar publication schedule but Capote soon resold the work to Esquire for $3,000. His novella appeared in Esquire’s November 1958 issue. A collection of the Breakfast at Tiffany’s novella and three short stories by Capote was published by Random House in the same year. The novella received glowing reviews. "If you want to capture a period in New York, no other book has done it so well. He could capture a period and place like few others" (Norman Mailer). The novella was quickly adapted for the 1961 hit film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard. Truman Capote was born in New Orleans and educated in New York and Connecticut. He worked in the Art Department of The New Yorker and as a writer on a television show before going on his own as a full-time writer. His first novel at age 24, Other Voices, Other Rooms, brought him literary fame and a strong following, which continued throughout his life, reaching a peak with the success of his "nonfiction” true...
