About the Item

This is the Fourth Volume of New Furniture, the International Annual devoted to the field of furniture design. Like its predecessors, this selection should be considered a report, rather than a judgement, on recent furniture design. It is clear that the days of revolutionary experimentation in form and construction are a thing of the past and that designers today are most interested in nuances and variations on established themes. This change of approach is not only a definite sign that modern furniture is steadily gaining wider acceptance but also that it is in danger of becoming dominated by mere fashion. The 347 illustrations chosen for this volume enable the reader to compare designs and products from fifteen different countries. This selection shows that basic forms and styles have been widely accepted without sacrificing all expression of national aptitude and preferences. The documentary text has been carefully prepared to give as much information as possible concerning designers and manufacturers. Hardback. Text in English and German. 162 pages. 975 grams.

Modern Danish Furniture by Esbjorn Hiort (Book)
Located in North Yorkshire, GB
Modern Danish Furniture is the third volume of a series of books on modern Danish applied art. This volume, like the earlier ones, is edited by the Danish architect Esbjorn Hiort, M.A.A., who has written the introduction. While Danish silver and Danish ceramics have long been well known and in great demand in foreign countries - especially among collectors - it has only been during the past ten years or so that Danish furniture has gained an international reputation. In his introduction, the author describes the modern development in this field, explains the reasons for the high artistic and technical standard of Danish furniture, and points out the characteristic details of the work of the leading Danish furniture designers. In the picture section there are numerous illustrations of unique pieces of the cabinet-maker's art as well as of fine examples of Danish commercial furniture...
