In original pictorial saddle-stitch wrappers, with chromolithograph illustrations throughout. Presented with a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell. This is a first edition, thus illustrated, of Clement Moore’s The Night Before Christmas or A Visit of St. Nicholas. Published in 1888 by the New York based McLoughlin Bros., this cherished Christmas tale is brought to life with beautiful full-page chromolithograph illustrations. It is available here in its original pictorial saddle-stitch wrappers and presented with a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell. A Visit from St. Nicholas (also known as 'Twas the Night Before Christmas) was first published in the the New York Troy Sentinel, on December 23, 1823. The poem was originally printed without an author attribution. For more than ten years, it was republished in periodicals during the holidays, still authorless. Finally, in the 1937 New-York Book of Poetry, Charles Fenno Hoffman identified his friend Clement Clark Moore as the author of the now beloved holiday poem. It took seven more years for Moore to include it in his own anthology of poems. The debate of authorship snowballed at the turn of the century, when family descendants of Henry Livingston claimed he penned the poem, not Moore. Numerous authors, scholars, and historical societies have argued for or against Moore’s authorship, but to many, the debate still remains unsettled. As the editor of the Sentinel, Orville L. Holley, aptly prefaced the first December 1823 printing: “We know not to whom we are indebted for the following description of that unwearied patron of children—that homely, but delightful personification of parental kindness—Sante Claus, his costume and his equipage, as he goes about visiting the fire-sides of this happy land, laden with Christmas bounties; but, from whomsoever it may have come, we give thanks for it. “ In the magical pages of this later 1888 McLoughlin Bros. edition, readers are gifted with beautiful full-page illustrations, as well as charming and festive border illustrations encircling the text. The American Antiquarian Society holds the original watercolor drawings for most of the illustrations used in this edition. CONDITION: Very good condition. Original pictorial saddle-stitched wrappers. Minuscule closed tear to front cover at fore edge, light rubbing and edgewear. Illustrated throughout with chromolithographs. Interior pages are bright and colorful, overall very healthy. Top edge of the textblock bumped. 16 pp. Presented in a new archival ¼ red leather and green cloth cushioned clamshell case, with raised bands, gilt tooling and titles to the spine. Book Dimensions: 12"H x 10"W x 1/8"D. Clamshell Dimensions: 13"H x 11"W x 1 1/8"D. Accompanied by our company's letter of authenticity.
