The Poetical Works of the late Thomas Little, Esq. by Thomas MOORE

About the Item

A handsomely-bound collection of juvenile poetry by Thomas Moore (1779 – 1852), published under the pseudonym of Thomas Little due to the eroticism of their content, as Moore's celebration of kisses and embraces was regarded as improper. A relatively successful publication, which was put to an end with the Victorian tight sense of propriety. Thomas Moore was an Irish poet, singer, songwriter and entertainer. He is best remembered for his lyrics of 'The Minstrel Boy' and 'The Last Rose of Summer'. Originally published in 1801. London: Dugdale, 1822. 12mo, 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (140 x 89 mm); ix, 95, ii pp. Handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf in straight-grained tan morocco with fine gilt decorations and green highlights on corners, spine with gilt title and delicate pointillé and floral decorations, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., rest uncut. Foxing to free endpapers and very small stain at foot of initial pages; minor rubbing to the spine and extremities Provenance William Foyle - W.A. Foyle / Beeleigh Abbey book plate in red morocco pasted inside front cover Pencil notation on second f.f.l. reads "First Edition of the poems of Thomas Moore, published under name of Thos Little." Condition: Near fine.

M. Barrie's (1860-1937) plays, 26 out of the 38 he wrote, of which 12 are one-act plays. This work was reprinted several times from its first issue in 1928, attesting to the popularity of his works for the theater, many of which discuss social concerns. The Twelve Pound Look (1910) concerns a wife leaving her 'typical' husband once she can gain an independent income. Other plays, such as Mary Rose (1920) and Dear Brutus (1917), revisit the idea of the ageless child and parallel worlds. However, Barrie's most lasting fame comes from creating PETER PAN, which is included in this volume, and had its first performance at the Duke of York Theatre in 1904. In 1911 Barrie would develop the play into a novel "Peter and Wendy...
