Ben Shahn, 1898-1969
Named one of the “World’s Ten Best Artists” by then-popular Look magazine in 1948 and renowned for his anguished, searingly bold imagery, artist and activist Ben Shahn protested against social injustice and honored ordinary people in lithographs, paintings, photographs, and public murals. For Shahn, art was a powerful tool for sociopolitical commentary and for urging and effecting change. As he asserted: “If we are to have values, a spiritual life and a culture, these things must find the imagery and interpretations through the arts.”

Ben Shahn
Ben Shahn (1898 – 1969) was a Lithuanian-born American artist. He is best known for his works of social realism, his left-wing political views, and his series of lectures published as The Shape of Content. Shahn began his path to becoming an artist in New York, where he was first trained as a lithographer. Shahn's early experiences with lithography and graphic design is apparent in his later prints and paintings which often include the combination of text and image. Shahn's primary medium was egg tempera, popular among social realists. Shahn mixed different genres of art. His body of art is distinctive for its lack of traditional landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Shahn used both expressive and precise visual languages, which he coalesced through the consistency of his authoritative line. Shahn is also noted for his use of unique symbolism, which is often compared to the imagery in Paul Klee's drawings. His art is striking but also introspective. He often captured figures engrossed in their own worlds. Although he used many mediums, his pieces are consistently thoughtful and playful.

Glenn Brown. Limited Edition. Signed Monograph book
By TASCHEN
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Collector's Edition of 788, numbered and signed by Glenn Brown.
The main spirit that runs through Glenn Brown’s work is transformation. The motif may come from old master paintings, the color scheme from modernist ones, the mood might be set by a title that quotes from a pop song. Brown became famous (and sometimes infamous) for his unabashedly appropriative work in the early 1990s, a golden era for young British art. He rendered the thick brushstrokes of expressionist painters like Frank Auerbach or Karel Appel almost photo-realistically, carefully modeling their dashing gestures with a fine brush until his smooth surfaces deceived the viewer’s eye. Taking space fantasies...
