About the Item

The poetical works of Percy Bysshe Shelley in Four Volumes, 1882. London: Reeves and Turner, 1882. Revised edition with important, exceptionally bound gilt decorated Moroccan hardcovers by Harrison & Sons. 413, 438, 477 and 606 pp. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was a major English Romantic poet, who was regarded as one of the best lyric and philosophical poets in the English language, and one of the most influential. A radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views, Shelley did not see fame during his lifetime, but recognition grew steadily following his death. On July 8, 1822, less than a month before his thirtieth birthday, Shelley drowned in a sudden storm on the Gulf of Spezia in his sailing boat, the Don Juan. After Percy's death his second wife Mary Shelley devoted herself to writing his biography and publishing his manuscripts. The books include her biographical notes and some very beautiful lyrics which had remained in manuscript. Volume I includes an engraved frontispiece portrait of Shelley by William Finden. Percy was a key member of a close circle of visionary poets and writers that included Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt, Thomas Love Peacock, and wife Mary who is the author of Frankenstein. The book has the library label belonging to Richard Greville Verney (1869-1923), 19th Baron Willoughby de Broke. Verney was a famous British peer and conservative politician.
