About the Item

Urbino - Venice Italian Renaissance Ceramics, Feu et Talent This catalogue has been published on the occasion of Frieze Masters 2016 Regents Park, London From 6-9th of October 2016. The Maiolica of Renaissance Venice at the beginning of the 16th c in Venice was at the centre of the artistic world. Celebrated for its school of painting, its position in decorative arts was also unrivaled: silk-weaving, gold and silver working, cabinet making, bookbinding, ivory working and lace making. Above all, the glassmaking industry dazzled all of Europe and beyond in its unprecedented supremacy. Maiolica production was also established early on. The guild of potters was founded in Initially called the Arte dei Scudeleri di pietra, from 1508 it was known as the Scuola dei Bocaleri. The Republic of Venice protected the guild of potters by forbidding the import of all ceramics (except for Spanish lustreware), from early in the 15th century until the following century. NPT Books, a division of Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.

Staffordshire Georgian Two Pearlware Religious Printed Childs Plates with Verse
By Staffordshire
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
Two fine English Georgian, probably Staffordshire, child’s pearlware plates decorated with religious scenes and verse dating from the early 19th century. The finely potted plates are of octagonal shape both with relief molded fruit and floral designs to the rim, one hand painted and other simply glazed rim but with a pink lustre edge. Due to the edge patterning being the same we believe the plates to have originated from the same pottery. Both plates have printed religious scenes to the center with printed prayers, possibly as teaching aids for children. One has a scene of Christ rising from the dead with a prayer reading ‘Behold him rising from the grave. Behold him raised on high. He pleads his merit there to save Transgressor doom’d to die.’ The scene shows soldiers, some sleeping around the entrance to the tomb. The second plate shows a child reading...
