Antique/Vintage Austrian watch chain fob of a pistol circa 1900
About the Item
This rare pocket watch fob is intended as an eye catching and interesting decoration for a watch chain.
It is beautifully made in polished steel with silver mounts in the form of a miniature flintlock pistol.
It remarkably has a fully working and detailed action for cocking and firing the hammer with the spring loaded trigger. There is also a separate spring loaded locking mechanism for opening the hinged barrel.
The pistol has eye-catching and ornate silver grips decorated with delicate incised scrolls. A matching silver ring attaches this fine pistol to a silver watch chain.
The barrel is stamped with the word Austria on the top edge.
This fine watch fob is a rare example and is in very good original condition.

A charivari is a piece of traditional Bavarian costume jewellery; this one is made of solid silver.
Bavarian men wear the charivari on the belt of their Lederhosen, women wear them as an apron tie or bodice closure.
This piece is quite heavy and sturdy. The size of its shackles and the chain length tells me this actually is a men’s charivari. It traditionally served as jewellery or as a talisman for a successful hunt. The charivari originated from a watch chain, which was attached to the buttonhole of the costume shirt and was hung with various hunting trophies. It could not be bought, was carefully preserved and was passed down in a single family through the generations.
