About the Item

Beautiful necklace handmade by Ken Beldin in Mexico around the 1950s. Simple, whimsical design made with simple materials: hammered copper and brass attached with two simple S-shaped wires, incorporated into a long, brown leather cord with one round black baquelite bead (in the photographs attached, the cord was shortened). Each piece features a different color and patina. The largest piece is engraved on the back with "Ken Beldin, Tenancingo, México". Ken Beldin was born in 1900 in Mississippi and educated at the University of California, Berkeley. He retired as head of a successful ad agency in Los Angeles in 1931 to travel through the Southwest. He worked for a time with Mexico’s National Railways, promoting railway tourism through Mexico, and was drawn into the rugged beauty of Mexico and its people. He set up a studio in the town of Tenancingo near Taxco (known as a silversmith´s town) in the State of Guerrero, where he focused on creating one-of-a-kind artisan jewelry and sculpture using copper, brass, steel, wood, and leather. He had his pieces exhibited and sold in gift shops in Mexico City, Tlaquepaque (Jalisco), Morelia (Michoacán), and Taxco (Guerrero). He was greatly influenced by pre-Hispanic art, as found in sculptures, figurines, and utilitarian objects retrieved throughout Mexico, integrating that local, age-old aesthetic into his Art. He is also remembered for his philanthropic projects, providing resources, education, and good nutrition to children from Mexican communities surrounding his dwelling place.
