Unique Mahogany and Seaweed Rope Screen from the 60s Attributed to Edmond Spence

About the Item

Original 4-panel screen attributed to Edmond Spence in Mahogany and handwoven seaweed twisted rope. Edmond Spence, ( American 1911-1986) began his career in his family furniture business in Batavia, New York. He developed an amazing ability for integrating other cultures' accents into his furniture-making, for a time it was an Asian style and sometime later the Swedish Scandinavian style that was appreciated and accepted by the American public. In the early 60´s he saw an opportunity for fabricating original pieces in Mexico that integrated successfully his design vision with traditional handmade processes of Mexican artisans and woodworkers, along with darker local-found wood like mahogany, cedar, and others. He worked in the Yucatán Peninsula with "Industria Mueblera" creating outstanding furniture of huge quality and modern style. The four-panel screen is not signed but is aligned with Spence´s time period, designs, materials and shows the same handwoven work applied in other of his better-known pieces.
