A Large Complete 1890's Set of McLoughlin Bros Picture Blocks with Storage Box

About the Item

A large and complete set of Picture Blocks from the McLoughlin Brothers Company circa 1892 in original presentation box The set titled Menagerie and The Lightning Express features twelve heavy cardboard blocks printed with different themes on each face which can be assembled into a number of configurations beyond the printed order. Side One features a late 1800's Western and Pacific train with its engine and various cars and passengers from high fashion ladies to dirty cowboys watching out the windows. Side Two features a circus processional with fantasy classical period marchers, wild beasts, acrobats on horseback and a Turkic caravan carrying a mystery person in a blossom on a camelback. the long sides feature a processional of children wearing the various high styles of numerous European empire period children carrying the letters of the alphabet on flags in a parade from A to Z. The small sides are the most fascinating of the set and feature a myriad of strange and amazing circus marvels including a "swiftwalker" (bicycle) stunt family in action, dogs in civil war outfits with guns making each other do stunts, a miniature horse race with monkey jockeys and loads of old world clowns in disturbing authoritarian postures overseeing dangerous feats. All in all a fascinating glimpse into how America saw itself recreating in the 1890's produced with some of the most high tech printing processes available at the time outside of the map makers in Chicago or London by a company who effectively created the board game as we know it in the 1840's and had a wealth of both talent and machinery available for making such a fine and complex set. All blocks are structurally in excellent condition and show minimal paper loss. the only block and side with appreciable wear is the steam engine which has peeling from play at the back of the car. Otherwise the set is in excellent condition for its age.
