About the Item
This wonderful complete painted textile was probably made to be the final wrapping for a burial shroud. What is fascinating about the piece is that although it was used as a vestment or wrapping cloth and was found sewn together at the back seam, the rectangular format suggests the pictorial surface and dimensions of a painting. is just that it is made of cloth rather than canvas.
In TEXTILE MASTERPIECES OF ANCIENT PERU, James Reid states that textile subjects are far less varied than those found in ceramics.
"Anecdotal subjects do occur. of war, fishing and worship, but the major effort is devoted to the representation of deities in the form of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic or composite beings, or of celestial bodies and to the portrayal of human subjects either wearing masks or functioning as god impersonators."
In this textile the figures are surrounded by a powerful two headed serpent and a large serpent face/mask dominates the center of the textile. The serpent is often associated with sacrifice, thunderstorms and rain. The legs of the figures seem to become part of the serpent imagery and the fingers and hair have zoomorphic attributes. The figures are brought to life by a lively expression which imbues them with a certain spontaneity and psychological animation.
Peruvian painted textiles served as ceremonial offerings to the gods, ancestors and the deceased, as well as highly valued gifts for the living. For us Pre-Columbian textiles appeal to our emotions, satisfy our craving for the beautiful and bizarre, and provide us with the key to the unconscious. These textile paintings have left a legacy in Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism where the mysterious images of Pre-Columbian cultures have found new vehicles of expression.
This Shroud was found and purchased in New York and was examined and authenticated in 1980s by Nobuko Kajitani ( Textile Conservation Deparment of the Metropolitan Museum of Art).
Laboratory tests of cotton and paint were done and available upon request.
