Black marble paperweight with micromosaic of Colosseum Rome souvenir Grand Tour

About the Item

Elegant Belgian black marble paperweight shaped at the edges with central oval plaque containing a micro-mosaic depicting a view of the Colosseum (Rome). These examples of micromosaics with views and glimpses of cities were typical souvenirs of the so-called "Grand Tour" trips taken by young European aristocrats. During the Grand Tour, young scions learned about the politics, culture, art and antiquities of European countries. They spent their time sightseeing, studying and shopping. The present mosaic is of good quality, well preserved, with excellent illusory property given the small size of the tiles. The paperweight is preserved in very good condition, minimal chipping on the edges. Mid-19th century era. Dimensions: H 9.5 cm x W 12.8 cm x D 1.8 cm.
