About the Item

A scarce vintage Dutch ‘Je Maintiendrai’ ( I will maintain) WWII peace commemorative large biscuit tin dating from around 1945. The tin of large, tall cylindrical shape has its original tight fitting cover the body printed with black and white portraits of Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, Franklin D Roosevelt and Chiang Kai-shek, The portraits are set within a wreath and bow surround with the respective flags of Russia, Great Britain, USA and China along with further emblems for each country. The emblems include Belgium, France and The Netherlands with a red, white and blue ribbon around the upper body of the tin. The dates 1939 and 1945 are printed to the reverse side of the tin. The lid is decorated with the coat of arms of the Netherlands including a banner reading JE MAINTIENDRAI along with the national flag and an orange pennant flag. The tin does not have any makers marks. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with wear associated with age and use with minor losses to the printed enamelling.

An unusual and fine antique Chinese Qing lacquered and inlaid papier mache handled sewing box with decorative panels dating from latter 19th or early 20th century. The sewing box is of round cylindrical shape with a swing carry handle and is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone. The body is made up of eight oval shaped scenes of typical Chinese style with buildings and people picked out with inset abalone and mother of pearl and highlighted and contained within a gilded border. These are set between bands of patterned abalone and against a blue silk background. A similar band of abalone is applied to the swing handle. Silver Cased Military Interest Presentation Snuff Box 1847

An exceptional and rare antique silver snuffbox reading 'PRESENTED TO St. Mr. P CAMPION, 1st Bn 19th Foot, by His, BROTHER SERJEANTS, As A Mark of Their, Sincere Regard.' in its original shaped fitted case and made by Cronin & Wheeler, Birmingham in 1847. The snuff box, probably unused, is simply stunning the cartouche shaped body engraved with rococo 'C' scrolls, engine turning and floral sprays with a hinged cover and richly gilded interior. The box has clear and crisp silver assay and makers marks to the cover and base and has date marks for 1847. Provenance: The property of a gentleman. Sergeant Major Patrick Campion was enlisted with the 19th Foot in 1838 and served in Malta, the Ionian Islands, the West Indies, Canada, the Crimea and India amongst other postings. He received a DCM at the Battle of Alma ‘for his gallant rescue, in company with a couple of his comrades, of a wounded officer of his own company, who was lying in front of the Russian line’s.’ and despite being injured in this act, he recovered and would see action at Inkerman, Redan and the siege of Sevastopol.
