About the Item

Constantinople (Istanbul) – Panoramic City View by Werner and Gläser, Augsburg c.1730 This striking hand-colored copper engraving offers a grand panoramic view of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), as seen across the Golden Horn from the district of Pera. The city is depicted in rich architectural detail, with its skyline dominated by mosques, minarets, palaces, and towers. Ships fill the harbor, and the foreground is animated with Ottoman figures on horseback, soldiers, banners, and symbolic objects of empire. The overall composition combines topographical accuracy with theatrical presentation, typical of early 18th-century European views of exotic cities. Drawn by the noted topographical artist Friedrich Bernhard Werner, engraved by A. Gläser, and published in Augsburg by Martin Engelbrecht, this print belongs to a celebrated series of cityscapes issued for the European print market. The publisher, Engelbrecht, was especially known for producing perspective views and scenes of faraway lands, catering to the fascination with foreign cities during the Baroque and Enlightenment eras. At the top, the print is titled “Constantinopolis / Constantinopel” in a decorative cartouche. A numbered legend below the image identifies more than 20 significant landmarks, including the Seraglio (Topkapi Palace), Hagia Sophia, the Galata district and tower, the harbor, city walls, and numerous churches and mosques. These details reflect the complex and multi-religious character of the city as the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The print is richly hand-colored, especially in the foreground, where military standards, Ottoman dress, and architectural elements are depicted with vivid tones. The background cityscape features a dense and intricate layering of spires and domes, conveying the grandeur of Istanbul as seen through European eyes in the early 1700s. Condition: Good condition overall. Some toning and light soiling to the margins, a faint vertical crease near the right edge, and minor signs of age. Original hand-coloring well preserved. Plate mark clearly visible. Framing tips: Best suited to a classic dark wood or gilt frame. Use an ivory or light parchment-colored mat to enhance the richness of the color and the ornate border. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand-coloring Maker: Drawn by F. B. Werner, engraved by A. Gläser, published by Martin Engelbrecht, Augsburg, c.1730
