About the Item

Public Execution Scene in Tonkin – Antique Engraving, 1787 Striking 18th-century copperplate engraving depicting a large-scale public execution in the Kingdom of Tonkin (present-day northern Vietnam) on 12 January 1737. The dramatic scene unfolds in a wide courtyard framed by hundreds of onlookers and soldiers, arranged in precise formation. At the centre, four missionaries are shown bound and kneeling, moments before decapitation by executioners wielding curved swords. The background features a richly decorated pavilion housing three enthroned figures, likely representing the king and his high officials, overseeing the proceedings. This historically significant engraving documents the execution of missionaries, including the Jesuit Father Pierre Pigneaux de Béhaine’s contemporaries, during a period of intense religious and political tension in Southeast Asia. The composition offers remarkable detail: the regimented ranks of soldiers with polearms, the disciplined placement of court officials, and the presence of European observers in the foreground, capturing both the ceremonial and brutal aspects of the event. English translation: Four Jesuit missionaries, namely Father Barthelemy, Father Emmanuel de Alon, and Father Jean Gaspard Cratz, of the Society of Jesus, and Vincent de Santa-quineta, beheaded out of hatred for the faith in the Kingdom of Tonkin on January 21 of the year 1737. Produced in 1787, the work exemplifies the high skill of late 18th-century European engravers in depicting distant lands and political events. Intended for a European audience, such engravings served both as records of foreign customs and as political-religious commentary, making them valuable sources for historians of colonial encounters, missionary activity, and Vietnamese history. Condition: Strong impression with fine detail. Vertical and horizontal folds as issued. Light toning at fold intersections and minor handling creases. Paper remains strong with one tear (repaired). Framing tips: Best displayed in a dark wooden or black frame with a light cream or antique white mount to enhance the engraving’s tonal depth. A wide mount will help centre attention on the dramatic composition. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Portier 1787

Chinese Funeral Procession with Palanquin – Engraving after Sonnerat, 1806
Located in Langweer, NL
Chinese Funeral Procession with Palanquin – Engraving after Sonnerat, 1806 This detailed engraving titled Convoi Chinois (Chinese Procession) captures a solemn and structured funeral convoy in Qing Dynasty China. At the center of the composition, a decorated palanquin—likely a funerary sedan—rests on the shoulders of uniformed bearers as they proceed through a mountainous landscape. The structure is ornate and domed, possibly symbolizing the status or wealth of the deceased. Surrounding the palanquin is a carefully choreographed group of attendants, officials, musicians, and mourners. To the right, ceremonial banners with trailing tassels are carried high above the procession, and numerous figures wear traditional Chinese robes and conical hats. Some appear to carry gongs or drums, indicating a ritual function. In the foreground, a man places circular offerings or markers along the path, which may be part of the ritual to guide or honor the spirit of the departed. In the background, a rugged terrain of cliffs and hills is visible, dotted with baskets, onlookers, and structures. The left side of the image shows mourners, including a veiled woman and child, standing respectfully aside. The scene presents a harmonious blend of human order and natural setting, reinforcing the gravity of the moment and the cultural significance of funerary rites in Chinese society. This engraving is based on sketches by French explorer Pierre Sonnerat (1745–1814), who traveled through Asia in the late 18th century. It was engraved by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Poisson (1747–1820) and published in the 1806 edition of *Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine*, a key French visual record of East Asian life and customs. The print offers rare insight into Chinese funerary...
