About the Item

A rare, unusual, and most charming diminutive hand-crafted Gold Rush era American country general store counter merchant desk. Mid-19th century, United States, most likely commissioned as a carpenter's prototype /apprentice model, possibly salesman sample shop display, or just an incredible child's toy. Executed in industrial American country / rustic farmhouse style, attributed to the gold and silver mining and trade industry, of unusually large size, especially for a furniture model, almost certainly a combined example, displaying two separate renderings - a retail country shop counter and trade desk, executed at different scale in order to fit together, while adding a layer of complexity to their creation. Primitive handmade solid wood construction, in the original paint finish, featuring a functional hand forged iron and twine balance scale with accessories, raised on a rectangular shop counter, mounted with a nonoperable crank style coffee bean grinder and weight holder, embellished with scroll shaped decorative architectural elements to the sides; affixed to a simple work table - writing desk with apothecary hutch, with flat desk surmounted by a tall rear shelved gallery hutch with molded cornice, fitted with various open shelf pigeonhole cubbies and six wooden drawers, over single frieze drawer, rising on square tapering straight legs, with beautifully aged warm mellow patina over the whole. Also includes numerous heavily patinated metal discs - faux coins (shown in a removed drawer in photos) Dimensions: (approx) 43" High, 19.5" Wide, 17" Deep A remarkable example of American folk art, the superb museum quality work presents wonderfully, embodying the entrepreneurial spirit of America, it's sure to make for a fascinating sculptural object in your distinguished study or office, as a freestanding floor sculpture, inspiring business decor, or as an interesting historical conversation starter Condition: Overall great antique condition, presents well, in desirable original unrestored condition. Sturdy, stable, structurally sound. Attractive appearance, with nicely aged distressed patina. Wear consistent with age, use and handling, including scattered minor nicks, worn finish, stable old chippy paint losses, possible accessory or grinder losses, nothing that detracts from the aesthetics, but only adds to the overall authenticity, sophisticated antique character, charm, and rich rustic warmth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time!

Dimensions: (approx) 56.75" High 41" Wide, 17.5" Deep History/Back Story: Louis Philippe furniture had the same types and forms as the earlier French Restoration style, but with less decoration; comfort was the primary consideration. During the turbulent French Revolution and following Napoleon rule, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) remained in exile for 21 years until the Bourbon Restoration, when he became the King of the French from 1830 to 1848. For the first time, the developing upper class–not the monarchy–influenced the progression of this style’s characteristics. However, King Louis Philippe’s personality still inspired many aspects.  His casual nature reflected this style’s informal, comfortable build. Much of the style was taken from the personality of the King himself. Unlike his Bourbon predecessors, he wore business dress...
