About the Item

French Faience Violin Manufacture of Rouen Beginning 1800 with a side pocket and two holes for hanging on the wall by means of a string, missing. This stanniferous glaze majolica violin is fully decorated in shades of ochre and blue with floral motifs, vases of flowers, cornucopias, and grids of screens, arabesques in shades of green that are also repeated on the edges containing shaped tableaus with polychrome flowers. The back of this ceramic musical bears other decorations with flowers and racemes in addition to the inscription of the French manufacture, lower left, 777 Rouen. This nineteenth-century instrument is not apt to produce sound; it represents a genre of decorative arts rare and precious. In good condition regardless of minimal enamel falls as visible in gallery photos. Comes from a private collection. The most valuable Delft tin-glazed faience violin is in the Ceramic Museum in Rouen, followed by one in the Loudon collection in La Haye, one in the Evenopoel collection in Brussels, and one in the Museum of the National Conservatory of Music in Paris.
