About the Item

Beautiful authentic Italian metal and wood portable tabernacle in style of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. A civil and military architect, Antonio da Sangallo the Younger was trained in the famous Florentine workshop run by his uncles, Giuliano (1443 / 45-1516) and Antonio da Sangallo Adult (c.1455-1534). In 1503 he went to Rome, where he remained practically all his life, together with his uncle Giuliano, to put himself at the service of the pontiffs of the Medici family, Leo X (1475-1521, Pope from 1513) and Clement VII (1478-1534, Pope from 1523). He was entrusted with tasks of primary importance, such as the direction of the factory of S. Pietro (as successor of Raphael, in 1520), the construction of Palazzo Farnese (later carried out by Michelangelo), that of the church of S. Maria di Loreto to the Trajan Forum (1507), the Sala Regia (1537) and the Pauline Chapel in the Vatican, as well as various other public and private buildings, such as the Mint (now Banco di S. Spirito), Palazzo Baldassini and the Palazzetto Le Roy. As a military architect he designed the urban fortifications of Rome, the fortress of Caprarola (1515), later transformed into a villa by Vignola, the Fortezza da Basso of Florence (1534-1537) and that of Ancona (1537). Antonio the Younger had a notable interest in techniques and mathematical tools.
