About the Item

This rare and elegantly understated 19th-century Dutch brass Hanukkah lamp is crafted from a single sheet of brass, uniting both the pentagon-shaped backplate and the rectangular drip pan in one seamless form. The lamp exemplifies the refined simplicity and practical ingenuity characteristic of Dutch Jewish ceremonial objects from this period. Affixed to the lower portion of the backplate is a cast brass oil reservoir featuring eight elongated, oval-shaped oil wells, each terminating in a pointed wick holder. These wells rest gracefully within the rectangular pan below, their slender forms mirroring the clean geometry of the backplate. The true distinction of this lamp lies in its chased and repoussé decoration, enhanced with meticulously pierced needlework. At the center of the backplate, a stylized eight-branched menorah is formed through tiny, delicately punched holes—its straight central stem and outward-curving base crafted with quiet precision. Flanking the menorah are two modest domed motifs, anchoring the symmetrical design. Running vertically through the menorah's stem is the Hebrew word "חנוכה" (Hanukkah)—subtly integrated using the same pierced, pinhole technique, lending the lamp both spiritual and visual depth. This pierced aesthetic continues across the top of the backplate, where a decorative drapery-like border is rendered in a series of rhythmic perforations, suggesting a festive curtain above the menorah scene. A dotted trim runs along the upper edges, echoing the geometry below and tying the composition together. At the apex of the lamp is a simple pierced suspension hole, allowing the piece to be hung on a wall—a traditional practice in European Jewish homes to maximize visibility during the festival. This lamp is a beautiful example of folk artistry combined with ritual function—its humble materials elevated by skilled craftsmanship and symbolic integrity.

18th Century Polish Brass Hanukkah Lamp

The backplate is cast and pierced with a central two-handled vase of flowers, flanked by fully formed birds with their heads turned outward. The side panels fitted with two servant lights, fronted by a row of eight oil fonts. Scholars theorize that these Polish Chanukah Lamps that bear two servant lights (as opposed to the singular servant light normally found on a Chanukah Lamp), served a purpose, having been used on one of the days that Chanukah fell on the Sabbath, as Sabbath Candlesticks. For another example, see page 296 of the book “Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps...
