About the Item

This finely made 19th century Sladen traveling icon has four folding panels representing "The Twelve Principal Orthodox Feasts and Miracle-Working Madonnas." This version has five colors of enamel - a sky blue, ocean blue, navy, yellow and green. This piece belonged to a wealthy European client's mother-in-law. I am not a specialist in Russian Icons, but was able to find a similar on a Russian Icon site and this is how the piece is described: "The icon is divided into 20 smaller panels: five on the far right panel depicting selected icons on Madonnas venerated by saints (The Dormition Mother of God of Tichvin with selected Saints; Mother of God of Vladimir with selected Saints, Mother of the God of Smolensk with selected Saints; Mother of God of Sign with Selected Saints with Praise of Mother of God - on the top) and the other 15 depicting a principal Feasts of the Orthodox calendar including The Annunciation: the Nativity of Christ: the Nativity of the Virgin; the Presentation of the Virgin to the Temple; the Crucification surround by Saint Martha, Virgin Mary, Saints John and Longin Centurion; the Presentation of Christ to the Temple; The Baptism of Christ; the Transfiguration of Christ; Christ's Entrance to Jerusalem. On the top New Testament Trinity God Father and The Son enthroned, and the sphere with cross between them, above The Holy Spirit in the image of a dove with symbols of the Evangelist below; The Resurrection and the Descent into Hell, The Ascension, and The Old Testament Trinity". Open, it measures 16.5" W x 7" H x .25" D. Closed, closed it measures 4.2" W x 7" H x .6 D".

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. The outside panel shows a lot of wear. Enamel is missing and it feels worn to the touch. Inside the is much better almost the whole inside has the enamel still intact. When closed it is not quite flush, a spray of WD- 40would fix this.
