19th Century traditional Russian Religious Icon “Full Cycle”

About the Item

Russia / 19th century / Religious Icon / oak / Baroque / Antique Traditional antique Russian Icon from the estate of a collector. Hand painted in tempura on an oak wooden panel in the 19th century. This icon, which depicts the major Orthodox religious celebrations of the year, is known as a “full cycle icon”. It depicts seventeen great feasts and the four evangelists; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, in the corners. The central scene shows the Anastasis (known in English as The Harrowing of Hell and in Russian as Voskresenie). Around Easter, the church holidays are grouped in 16 scenes. The holidays are 'read' from left to right and from top to bottom. The first row depicts the birth of the Mother of God, the presentation of Mary in the temple, the Old Testament Trinity with the New Testament Trinity above it, the Annunciation and the birth of Christ. The second row depicts the presentation of Christ in the temple and the baptism of Christ in the Jordan. The third row depicts the entry into Jerusalem and the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor. The fourth row depicts the Ascension of Christ and the falling asleep of the Mother of God. The bottom row depicts the raising of Lazarus, the beheading of John, the Crucifixion of Christ, the fiery ascension of Elijah and the Exaltation of the Cross. The four evangelists are depicted in the corners. In the edges, texts referring to the holidays are shown. The orthodox icons respond to a tradition that is foreign to painting of a representational nature. In the icons everything has a symbolism: the color must express the inner luminosity, a light that does not come from the physical world. In them there is no usual space, just as there are no conventional events. The icon is an open window to a world of a spiritual nature.
