About the Item

Rare church altar model with hand painted biblical phrases in Latin. We don't know who would have used this unique Gothic Revival scale church alter. The bronze handle on top suggests that it was made for traveling purposes. We cannot verify this, because there aren't any of these altars to be found anywhere in the world. This Gothic Revival religious relic is marvelously crafted and hand carved out of solid tiger oak and the beautiful trees of life are both done in gold leaf. From the discoloration in the center console with the hand-carved Gothic overhang, you can clearly see where the crucifix used to be. On the sides would have been candle holders or earth angel sculptures. The shape and colors combined with the perfect Gothic elements make this antique a real gem to look at and this unique antique could be the perfect 'alter cabinet' to create your home shrine with. The hinged plywood 'flap' in front must be a smaller replacement of the original one. Which, we think, would have been made of the same oak and it would have closed this cabinet entirely. Removing the flap and adding a pair of hooks on the back can also make this piece perfect for wall mounting. The hand-written, biblical, Latin phrase in the hand-painted banner at the bottom reads 'qui manducat hunc panem vivat in aeternum'. This translates to 'he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever'. We feel that in the compartment behind this phrase the wafers would have been kept.
