About the Item

Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival cabinet, with interior shelf and central door. Heavily adorned with carved panels to front and sides. The front is comprised of panels flanking a central door. To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window”. The floral panels on this piece are evocative of Renaissance design elements, particularly those involving vases and vegetal motifs. The cabinet is heavily adorned with depictions of flowers, primarily of the tulips that captivated Europe in the 17th century. Tulip mania swept across Europe, creating, and wiping out fortunes, inspiring artists, and aristocratic gardeners, leaving a lasting legacy of a love of the tulip form. Gothic and Renaissance pieces were typically undated which leads me to believe that the date on this piece was added in the 19th century as part of a common French process known as rajustage. The advent of industrialization in the late 19th century ignited a desire to acquire quality hand crafted furniture such as that from the Gothic and Renaissance periods. To meet this burgeoning demand, cabinet makers often repurposed elements of older pieces, incorporating them into new furniture. While some were passed off as original to the earlier period, most were sold as hybrids of old and new. These "new" furniture items are antiques in their own right today. Dimensions: 44" H x 61" W x 26" D Condition: Good. Overall structurally sound. The door locks with the key retained. Some evidence of earlier insect damage to inner bottom corner right front panel (see photograph). Top is comprised of two pieces, with some separation between the two. Shows well and ready to place.
