About the Item
A rare and finely cast Japanese bronze altar stand from the early Edo period, dated Keian 3 (1650). The top is shaped in a stylized quatrefoil form, supported by three expressive guardian head feet, each with exaggerated features—likely Demon (Oni) or Karura figures—intended to ward off evil and protect sacred objects placed upon the stand.
Inscriptions (Translation from Base):
護摩器并前具附一通
為両親菩提也施主
大塚邑小富山口左衛門
慶安三卯年四月八日
十楽寺什物
者浄代求之
English Translation:
“Goma ritual implements and their accessories, one set.
Dedicated for the spiritual benefit of [my] parents.
Donated by Gotō Saemon of Kozuka Village,
On the 8th day of the 4th month, 3rd year of Keian (1650).
Temple property of Jōrakuji.
Procurer: Jōdai.”
This object was clearly commissioned as a Goma ritual offering platform—used in esoteric Shingon Buddhist fire ceremonies. The donor’s name and the temple’s name, Jōrakuji (十楽寺), are explicitly carved, and such documentation adds rare provenance.
Features:
Material: Cast bronze with warm natural patina
Date: Keian 3 (1650), early Edo period
Provenance: Jōrakuji Temple; donor Gotō Saemon
Function: Platform for Goma (護摩) fire ritual implements
Feet: Stylized demon or guardian faces, fierce and protective
Inscription: Fully engraved underside with date, purpose, and temple affiliation
