About the Item

A fine antique Russian icon of The Protection of the Mother of God, Pokrov Moscow School 19th century The Protection Icon depicts the Mother of God appearing above congregants at the Church of the Vlakhernae at Constantinople, holding her veil above them as a sign of protection. She looks up in prayer to her son Jesus Christ in the upper left corner and is surrounded by an assembly of Saints, including Saint John the Baptist, and Church Fathers. Emperor Leo VI and his wife, Empress Zoe are pictured on the left to commemorate the reign during which the miracle of the Pokrov is believed to have occurred, the beginning of the 10th century AD. The figure in the center standing on the dias is Roman Sladkopevets, sladkopevets translates to one who sings sweetly. Frustrated with his singing, Roman fervently prayed to have a voice worthy of signing the praises of Mary. He prayed so long that he fell asleep in the church and had a dream that Mary appeared to him, giving him a scroll to eat. When he awoke, his voice was transformed to the most beautiful, sweetest voice and he went on to compose many great church melodies. At lower right are the figures of the Holy Fool Andrei pointing out the vision to his disciple Epifaniy. The Pokrov is celebrated in Russia on October 1st. It traditionally marked the beginning of the marriage season, the first girl to light a candle in front of the Pokrov Icon was said to be the first to marry. Strong architectural elements and fine, richly clothed, detailed images of the saints and the Virgin support the attribution to the Moscow School. Original gilding largely intact. This icon is in very good original condition commensurate with age. It is painted on a linden wood panel, the finest wood chosen for its stability and density.

Antique Russian Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah Rare 5 Color Enamel Icon
Located in New York, NY
A rare Russian five color polychrome enamel bronze travel icon depicting scenes from the life of the Prophet Elijah including the Fiery Ascension. The border in cornflower blue enamel and scrolled foliate elements topped by the Old Slavonic inscription- Obraz Sviatovo Proroka Ulii- Image of the Holy Prophet Elijah. In the upper left corner is of the hand of God on a white enamel background signifying the clouds. To the right is the Fiery Ascension of Elijah with his dynamic winged horses on a background of finely hand chased flames with stylized wind gusts. The Prophet holds the reigns in his right hand and reaches out with his left to his follower Elisha with a mantle for the parting of the waters of the river Jordan. The river Jordan takes center stage in the icon as a dramatic element - a wide swath of flowing waves with the scenes from the life of Elijah depicted to its left: The Prophet Elijah in the wilderness; Elijah hides in the desert and is fed by an Angel; and Elijah and Elisha crossing the river Jordan parted by Elijah's mantle. This scarce icon is especially significant for the Old Believers tradition. The Old Believers were the chief makers of bronze icons, created by using fire rather than painted by hand. The veneration of the Prophet Elijah, who through his sacrifice, was able to call for fire from heaven manifests a special connection for the sect. Fire, ogon in Russian, was viewed as a purifier and a link to the Last Judgement and the end of the world. Polychrome enamel icons...
