Gothic Revival Bronze Jewelry Box with Biblical Scenes in Church Window Panels

About the Item

Antique and wonderfully designed bronze Gothic box with birth of Christ scenes and more. Over the years we have sold a number of rare and unique boxes, but never a Gothic Revival one looking like a medieval antiquity and with such a marvelous patina as this 19th century specimen. The biblical scenes on top are about the three wise men bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. There are as much as 16 panels with biblical scenes in this hand-crafted Gothic box and anyone who knows what it took (in terms of time and skills) to create this box will be just as enthousiastic as we were when we first saw it. It would have taken an artisan quite a few hours (if not days) to first design this piece on paper. The biblical scene sculptures would then have to be hand carved out of wood or handmade using clay. Then molds would have to be made from those sculptural plaques after which they would have been cast in bronze. The castings would have to be polished and the panels would have to somehow be welded together. Then any sharp edges would have to be grinded away and this box would also have been patinated and the lid hinged. When you look at this box with that in mind then you will see it in a whole new dimension. Have you also noticed the stylised and stunning six leaf Gothic rosette inside the lid? This antique box is so rare, it will be impossible to find out what exactly it was used for, where in Europe it was made and whom it was made for. The only mark we have found thusfar is the struck number 4 in image 14. In image number 12 you can see (in the top left of the box) that there is a dent, causing the backside of the box to bend slightly inward. For us to have found this item again felt like a blessing, for it to be in this very good condition (also with the minor dentation) made it all the more desirable. Whether this antique sells to a church or to a private collector, put on display it will look marvelous and it will never fail to impress.
