A wonderful antique religious carved wood and plaster Catholic Church altar figure. The large sculpture depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, dating to the late 19th / early 20th century. Depicted in Franciscan habit, with pierced gilt metal halo, posed holding a bible and Christ the child, rising on a plinth base. circa 1900 Dimensions (approx): 47" High, 14.25" Wide, 14.5" Deep Great original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged distressed patina. Wear consistent with age and use, including typical chippy paint finish losses.

A rare one-of-a-kind pair of large rustic antique European hand carved stripped and scraped wood Santo church altar figures. 18th/early 19th century, primitive hand-crafted construction, finely detailed and sculpted, depicting Saint Francis of Assisi with arm raised and Madonna with her hands folded in prayer, stripped bare wood with section of original heavily worn distressed chippy paint finish adding to the overall antique character and charm! This rare 17th century panel, carved in high relief, is museum quality and without doubt the work of an important Flemish master carver. It represents the biblical scene of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem for the census. Multiple figures surround the center in a well balanced setting. Rich, deep color and great patina, which developed over about 400 years, make this piece of art exceptional. The panel is mounted on a later dusty rose velvet backing. Condition: Small part of backdrop on right is missing. Joseph’s left hand is missing.
