Large size antique Gothic Art painting 'The Apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint James'.
We are by no means connoisseurs when it comes to antique paintings, but we have seen enough antique paintings to know when something is special, decorative and truly inspiring and interesting to look at. And the large size of this antique work of art, makes it impressive too. Also, because it must have taken one very skilled painter an awful lot of time (probably weeks, if not months) to hand-paint this famous religious scene. According to ancient local tradition, on January 2nd of the year AD 40, the Virgin Mary appeared to James on the bank of the Ebro River at Caesaraugusta, while he was preaching the Gospel in Iberia. Looking at the perfectly painted ancient landscape
and the kneeling figure who is in awe of what he is witnessing (by the river bank) we believe this is in fact the apparition of Mary to James. Following that apparition, by the way, St. James returned to Judea, where he was beheaded by King Herod Agrippa the first (in the year AD 44). Judging from the skillfully painted individuals in the Renaissance Style and the striking and lively colors, we believe, this late 1800s painting is the work of a true artisan. This work of religious art on the back reads 'Sacerdote Salvatore Rosa, Dipinse 1889' which means Priest Salvatore Rosa, Painted 1889. This priest clearly had a god given talent and god bless him for having created this masterpiece.
Apart from some minor imperfections this large and nostalgic painting is in very good condition and we believe it will look particularly great in a church, monastery or chapel. At the same time, a one of a kind antique like this will ofcourse also look great atop the stairwell of a mansion or in the entry hall of a French castle etc. We don't know the 'exact' value of this large size antique painting...

This amazing Gothic ceiling light clearly did not come from a home or even from a mansion originally and finding this gem totally made our day. It is most likely that it was initially made for a church or for a monastry and we were told that it got salvaged after the second world war. The XL size and the pure Gothic design make this fully original and complete chandelier unlike anything you ever saw. A statement piece like this is the perfect lighting and decorative solution for a large room with a Gothic or Medieval look and feel. At least as important are ofcourse the many Gothic symbols with which this chandelier is laced. First of all, the multifoil design of the chandelier itself could not be more Gothic. Secondly, the latin text 'CHRISTUS EST LUX' (Christ is the Light) in Gothic lettering and all around this chandelier is another 'Gothic feature' that tells you this enormous chandelier can only have been made for a church or monastery. Thirdly. the Medieval shields that are on each of the torch-design candle holders all come with an IHS sign (for Jesus) inside another multifoil symbol, which in turn is surrounded by fleur de lis symbols. For the collectors of stunning antique church relics we are also offering this marvelously hand carved pelican sculpture for wall mounting. The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The pelican in Christian art is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity. Many early painters and carvers mistakenly represented it more similar to an eagle (much like in this antique church relic), and not as a natural pelican which is why most people today still are a bit confused at first when this stunning hand carved, symbolic bird is called a pelican.

If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. A magnificent rustic Spanish Colonial antique, circa 1725, church altar with remarkable patina and detailing.
Hand-crafted in the first half of the 18th century, most likely commissioned by the Spanish Empire for use in a Colonial religious Mission, now fashioned with later antique elements and repurposed for use as a sideboard.
The scarce Baroque period ecclesiastical architectural church altar presents with a raised gallery shelf back topped with a single board, over a massive, thick pine plank wooden slab top, featuring impressive rich patina, rustic charm and antique character. Mounted over the distinctive architectural trapezoid shaped molded base with rich hand carved and polychrome painted decoration, including the sophisticated original Italian / European inspired trompe-l'œil marbleizing finish, which was a variety of faux painting techniques used only by highly skilled artisans to create the distinctive and varied patterns of marble, in an effort to reproduce the colors, veining and luster of real marble or other building materials. Rising on solid supports enhanced with recessed paneling, smooth rounded corners and edge work and stepped molded trim.
Beautiful, nicely aged patina over the whole, highly desirable heavily worn, naturally distressed, chippy paint craquelure finish that has been stabilized to minimize further loss, that does not detect from the aesthetics or functionality, but only adds to the overall elegant warmth and rich historical depth, that can only be acquired over three centuries. Very strong, sturdy, stable. Delivered cleaned, hand waxed, luminous polished French patina finish, ready for immediate use, and many more years of generational enjoyment.

This rare antique religious work / object of art, circa 1750, most likely commissioned by the Catholic Church of Spain, destined to be prominently displayed as an altarpiece / retablo or as part of a much larger reredo, directly behind the main altar at a Spanish or Continental European Catholic Church (French, Italian, Iberian, Portuguese)
The Crucified Christ, displayed mounted on a later faded red fabric upholstered shaped backboard plaque with textured gilt border. The exceptional hand sculpted, carved, gessoed, polychrome painted figure depicting bloodied Jesus, with crown of thorns atop his head, only wearing a undulating shaped cloth around his loin, arms extended and feet crossed, spear head form iron nails through both. The verso covered in an old paper printed backing with metal hook hardware at top for wall hanging.

Good original antique condition. Presents well. Strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound. Nicely aged mellow warm patina. Wear consistent with age and indicative of use, including scattered losses to the paint, old repairs and touchups throughout, and various other antique character marks that add to the overall display, authenticity, and rustic old world charm.

Because of the rarity, the importance and the deeper meaning of this incredibly well carved wooden church sculpture, we were immediately sold when we first saw it. This offering of Isaac by Abraham sculpture is the only one of its kind that we have ever seen and with the great many details this clearly is the work of a master carver. This incredibly detailed sculpture had to first be drawn on paper and then it must have taken the sculptor weeks rather than days to fully hand-carve it. It is highly likely that the polychrome painting of this church relic was done by yet another specialized artisan and the 'finished product' is among the best we have ever seen. With this being one of the most important and best known biblical stories in Western / Christian civilization, we are certain that this rare collectible will again be gracing a house of prayer or a private collection soon. Even with the lower fragment of the angel's body and some other details missing (such as the blade of the sword Abraham is holding) this one of a kind antique is great value for money. There are so many (symbolic) details and this composition is so well balanced that this piece will never fail to impress. Have you also noticed the 'lamb of god' tucked away in the lower left corner, behind the logs of wood? The artist clearly used every inch of this wood carving to create the richest sculpture anyone could ask for. As you can see in our photos, this church relic can both be used on the wall (via a strong metal hook on the back) or free standing on a table.
