Antique Wood Sculpture or Bust of a Woman or Madonna - Hand Carved and Bronzed

About the Item

This bronzed wood sculpture or bust is beautifully carved in a minimalist style that evokes a sense of serenity. Interestingly, this wooden sculpture comes from Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec -- formerly a 17th century French Catholic settlement in what is now known as Canada -- and is most likely a representation of the virgin Mary. The age of this wood sculpture is unknown. It has an interesting finish that consists of an unvarnished dark brown stain highlighted with bronze reminiscent of 17th and 18th century staining methods. There is a natural crack running up the back centre of the piece consistent with aging and drying of the wood. There are also a various minor scuffs and scratches and a few dents on the top of the head but this doesn't interfere with the aesthetic beauty of this piece. For some, this sculpture may provide a source of religious comfort, and for others, perhaps a sense of serenity or prompt for reflection. Nevertheless, this sleek sculpture would make a stunning statement in any home. Top of mind styles includes minimalist or Mid-Century Modern décor.

Rare bronze sculpture of a joyous boy from the early 1900s. The sculptor of this Fine work of art has managed to capture the pure innocence and joy of a young child. Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna on Laughing Boy — The representation of children belongs among the most charming motifs revived by Renaissance art under the influence of Hellenism. Like a number of similar statuettes of equally unaffected charm, this one is probably the portrait of a child conceived as the infant Jesus. Such statuettes were commissioned to be set up in private chapels. The Laughing Boy is considered to be the last work of Desiderio da Settignano...

  • Large Antique Hand Carved Sandstone Sculpture, Bust of Christ with Display Stand
    Located in Lisse, NL
Top quality and mint condition bust sculpture from the early 1900s with maker's name. This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. Thanks to its amazing quality, its excellent condition, its deeper meaning and its powerful presence this work of religious art will never fail to impress, no matter where you decide to have it on display. For it to have come our way felt like a blessing and to be able to offer it to the 1stdibs community in this amazing condition is an honour for us. Our fair price for this museum worthy sculpture again includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days.
