Vintage Sculpture - Wood and Leather Gazelle Likely from Liberty's London
About the Item
This vintage wood and leather animal sculpture from the early 20th century is likely from Liberty's London. This sculpture, hand carved in wood and clad in leather, depicts a lifelike gazelle that exudes grace in form, stance, and proportion. The structure and execution of this piece demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship in carving and in application and tooling of leather, resulting in a realistic rendering of this beautiful African animal. In some areas the leather looks darker and may be stained or died to get this effect. The gazelle's eyes are made of black glass and exude a soulful gaze that captures the essence of this exotic creature.
This exquisite piece of art would pair well with the vintage wood and leather clad wildebeest also for sale on 1stDibs.
Note that the back two feet don't sit flat. However, this does not affect the stability. There is also a small loose flap of leather under the tail. Otherwise, this piece is in fine condition.
