Vintage Sculpture - Wood and Leather Wildebeest Likely from Liberty's London
About the Item
This vintage wood and leather animal sculpture from the early 20th century is likely from Liberty's London. This sculpture, handcarved in wood and clad in leather, depicts a lifelike wildebeest that exudes a sense of dolefulness and is realistic in form, stance, and proportion. The structure and execution of this piece demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship in carving and in application and tooling of leather, resulting in a realistic rendering of this beautiful African animal. In some areas the leather looks darker and may be stained or died to get this effect. The wildebeest's eyes are made of black glass, and exude a doleful gaze that captures the essence of this exotic creature.
This exquisite piece of art would pair well with the vintage wood and leather clad gazelle also for sale on 1stDibs.
Note that there is a mark on the left side of the neck and some damage to the left horn and right ankle. Otherwise, this piece is in fine condition.
