Another stunning, hand painted, oil on canvas, work of religious art.
This antique oil painting was first hand painted on canvas and later glued to a zinc backplate which is one way of keeping the painting in the best possible condition over a longer period of time. In this polychrome painted, antique 11th station the artist clearly shows us one of the most famous scenes that took place in the history of Christianity. In fact, it is often said that this crucifixion of Jesus was in fact the beginning of Christianity. As you can see the quality of the workmanship is excellent, but the scene and its meaning ofcourse is even more impressive. The quality of this historically significant scene is remarkable and that makes this 11th station also an ode to the workmanship of its creator(s). The colors are still as bright as the day this piece was made and together with the gilding in the halo of Christ they give this piece an extra special, evangelic and holy aura. The artist has truly captured the drama of what Jesus (and His followers) had to go through in His final moments. This striking painting is in its beautifully hand carved, original, Gothic Revival oak frame and this frame too is a work of art in its own right. You can see the quality of the carving in the perfect symmetry of the Gothic 'fleur de lis' and also in the multiple rosettes in the rim of the frame. The name of this 11th station can be read (in Dutch) in the hand painted banner at the bottom of the frame.
