Large & Important Wooden Church Crucifix w. Corpus of Christ Signed By P. Luypen

About the Item

Rare and important church crucifix by master sculptor Petrus Franciscus Luypen (1763-1833) of Amsterdam. For the collectors of only the rarest religious artefacts we also have this striking, museum worthy and important, antique corpus of Christ on a tall and narrow wooden cross. This Dutch crucifix is made and signed by P. Luypen of Amsterdam, Holland and it is only the second antique that we have owned by an artist of whom there is another antique on display in the worldfamous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Pieter Luypen is ofcourse mentioned in the RKD (the Dutch Institute for Art History) as a draftsman, a painter and a master sculptor. He was baptised in Amsterdam on May 23rd of 1763 and later in life became a member of the famous Sint Lucas Gilde (the Guild of Saint Luke) in Amsterdam. We were immediately impressed by this large size crucifix and we particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head and died. The tall and narrow cross is original to this corpus and although this is not entirely uncommon for a large Dutch crucifix of this period, it could mean that this crucifix was made for one of the last 'home churches' or so called 'clandestine churches' in Amsterdam. For a period of at least 200 years religious freedom was only for the Calvinist Reformed Church and not for, for example, Roman Catholics, Remonstrants, Lutherans or Mennonites. Since most could not switch to the Reformed Church, many went 'underground', hence the term 'clandestine church'. The Dutch word 'schuilkerk' actually literally translates to 'hiding church' and some have been kept in their original condition and if you ever go to Amsterdam you should certainly visit one. Since some of these hiding churches were only accessable through particularly narrow doors/openings, this very rare crucifix by P. Luypen could have been made for such a hiding church. Unfortunately we have no way of proving that though. If you look closely you can see the holes in the cross via which this large and impressive crucifix was once mounted (probably with large antique bolts). The cherry on the cake of this rare church relic is ofcourse the P. Luypen AMSt (for Amsterdam) 'signature' on the back, because you simply don't find pieces of this master sculptor. Let alone one of this size, deeper meaning and superb condition. There is one other thing that we, as antique enthousiasts (or geeks), found truly amazing. It is the pair of handcrafted and very large screws that keep the corpus of Christ tightened to the cross. With them being over an inch in diameter they are the largest pair of handcrafted antique screws we have ever seen. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty, the deeper meaning and the importance we are convinced that this antique crucifix by P. Luypen too will find a new custodian soon. Whether it be in a private home, a monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1700s or early 1800s will never fail to impress. Mind you, our price for this unique church crucifix even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days.
