Mid-Century Italian Terracotta Madonna & Child Sculpture by S. Melani for Arnova

About the Item

Embodying grace and quiet devotion, this finely modeled terracotta sculpture of the Madonna and Child was crafted in Italy circa 1950. Designed by S. Melani and produced by Arnova, a respected maker of religious statuary, the piece captures the Virgin Mary in a serene pose, gently cradling the Christ Child in her arms. Her flowing drapery, downcast gaze, and hooded mantle evoke a tender spiritual intimacy, characteristic of mid-century Italian devotional art. Although made of terracotta, the sculpture is skillfully finished to resemble carved wood, with subtle texture and a warm, natural tone that enhances its lifelike presence. The back is inscribed with the artist’s name “S. Melani”, along with the impressed mark Arnova and the model number N. 100, confirming its authenticity.
