Pair of 16th Century Iznik "Dome on the Rock" ceramic tiles.
These tiles formed part of the ceramic tile pattern that covers the exterior of the base of the Dome Of The Rock shrine, on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem.
The tile work and was commissioned in the 16th century by Suleiman the Magnificent.

Provenance: Property of a private European collector.
Footnote: This design was first seen on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which was tiled on the instructions of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent around 1545. Soon after similar tiles appeared on several building in Aleppo, most notably Bait Jumbiatt, the Ummayad Mosque and the Khosrowiyya Mosque, as well as numerous private houses.
