Two ottoman iznik border tiles, circa 1600, each of rectangular form, the glazed fritware painted in underglaze turquoise, cobalt blue, black and terracotta red with a continuous band of leafy arabesque scrolls enclosing flowerheads, with turquoise borders, mounted. Turkish, circa 1600. Provenance: Property of a private European collector.

    A panel of four square Ottoman Empire ‘Dome of the Rock’ tiles, painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a trellis of split and winged palmettes with cloud-scroll collars, framed. Syrian, 16th century. 15 in square, framed 17 ½ in square. Provenance: Property of a private European collector. Footnote: This design was first seen on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which was tiled on the instructions of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent around 1545. Soon after similar tiles appeared on several building in Aleppo, most notably Bait Jumbiatt, the Ummayad Mosque and the Khosrowiyya Mosque, as well as numerous private houses.     A pair of ormolu equine portraits of famous war horses ‘Copenhagen’ and ‘Marengo’, each with a beautifully detailed horse, the slightly stockier horse, with an elaborate deep saddle with a triangular cloth and padded roll, is probably Marengo while Copenhagen has a simpler harness and rangier body, on the original velvet ground and within rosewood a frame. English, circa 1860. Marengo (c. 1793–1831) was Emperor Napoleon’s grey Arab war horse named after the Battle of Marengo in Italy. Although technically a pony at 14.1 hands, he was indomitable.
