About the Item

Russia / 19th century / Religious Icon / oak / Baroque / Antique A Russian Feastday icon in tempera on panel from the estate of a collector. Hand painted in the 19th century. The Russian icon of the "Twelve Feasts" represents the twelve great feasts of the liturgical year of the Orthodox Church. They are represented on the icon in 13 separate frames and are placed around the central scene of Christ's Resurrection and Descent to the Underworld. Surrounding the central scene are the twelve episodes from the life of Christ (despotic feasts) and the Mother of God (theomitoric feasts).
In the central scene the Resurrection and the Harrowing of Hades in a diagonal composition. In the border 12 depictions of religious feasts in the orthodox calendar (from left to right and from above downwards): 1. The Nativity of the Mother; 2. The Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple; 3. The Annunciation; 4. The Nativity of Christ; 5. Candlemas (The Meeting of Christ in the Temple); 6. The Theophany (The Baptism of Christ); 7. The Entrance into Jerusalem; 8. The Transfiguration on mount Thabor; 9. The Assumtion of Christ; 10. The Old Testament Trinity; 11. The Dormination of the Mother of God; 12. The Elevation of the Holy Cross. The orthodox icons respond to a tradition that is foreign to painting of a representational nature. In the icons everything has a symbolism: the color must express the inner luminosity, a light that does not come from the physical world. In them there is no usual space, just as there are no conventional events. The icon is an open window to a world of a spiritual nature.
