About the Item

This unique item begins with a backdrop of original copper engravings from the early 19th century, depicting the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, also known as Kotel in Hebrew. In the center of the frame is an open Jewish prayer book from 1811, written in Hebrew and Yiddish. This specific type of prayer book was used during the Jewish high holidays, the peak of the spiritual season for the Jewish calendar, known as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Surrounding the prayer book, is a rare sterling silver Mezuzah and two sterling silver torah pointers. The Mezuzah, from 1894, is still attached to a piece of wood from the original door jamb it was mounted to. The torah pointers, also known as Yad (literally translated from Hebrew as “hand”) are shown resting on limestone pieces from the original Kotel wall in Jerusalem. The final touch to this remarkable piece is two prayer scrolls, mounted and bound by a red wax seal on top. All these antique items are displayed within an intricate gold gilded 19th century frame, with stunning trimming from the same period. Every Judaica piece from this extraordinary display survived World War One and World War Two, even the infamous book burnings by the Nazis on May 10, 1933. Each historical item was collected by an anonymous artist to create a magnificent display of Jewish history to inspire cultural appreciation.
