About the Item

Outstanding Spanish carving of San Juanito, 16th century, school of Juan de Ancheta. Juan de Ancheta (1533 - November 30, 1588) was a Spanish sculptor in the Romanesque style. His works in wood and alabaster influenced the area of the current Basque Country, Navarra, Burgos, Aragon and La Rioja. This magnificent carving shows great monumental, with a figure of powerful anatomy. The hair expresses the mannerism of the time with its sweetly wavy movement. Dressing with wide knife folds describes rich braising and fine browning. Hands in a prayer position accompanied by a raised gaze towards the Lord. A magnificently crafted piece for high exigent art collector Juan de Ancheta (or Anchieta)1 (Azpeitia, Guipúzcoa, c. 15332 – Pamplona, Navarra, November 30, 1588) was a Spanish sculptor in the Romanist style. His works in wood and alabaster influenced the area of the current Basque Country, Navarra, Burgos, La Rioja and Aragón. It is believed that he was trained in Italy, because his style reveals influences from important Italian masters; but there is no documentation to support such a stay. Around 1565 Ancheta was in Valladolid, but shortly after he must have been in Briviesca, presumably helping Gaspar Becerra with an altarpiece for the church of the Santa Clara convent. Ancheta's style reveals the influence of Becerra's mannerism, enriched with the classicism of the sculpture that was made in Rome. Ancheta had possibly worked with Becerra around 1558, on an altarpiece in the cathedral of Santa María de Astorga. He continued working in the area of Valladolid and Burgos, and was named by Juan de Juni in his will as the only sculptor capable of completing his altarpiece in Santa María de Mediavilla, in Medina de Rioseco. Finally, said altarpiece would be completed by another artist, Esteban Jordán. He returned to the Basque Country and married Ana de Aguirre in his place of origin, around 1570. They soon moved to Pamplona, passed through Aragon and settled permanently in Pamplona. In 1571 he finished the delicate figures of the altarpiece of the chapel of the archangels of Saint Michael, Gabriel and Raphael of the Zaragoza cathedral, ordered to be built by the prominent Jewish-converted financier Gabriel Zaporta. Measurements: 87 x 35 x 24 cm depth

Rare 18th C Wooden Statue of St. John the Baptist
Located in Chicago, IL
This exceptionally life-like antique sculpture is carved from linden wood and once decorated a French church or cathedral. The figure stands authoritatively, with right arm raised and index finger extended toward heaven. It probably stood on a base in a side chapel. According to Christian iconography of the period, this gesture signifies that salvation comes only through baptism. The figure wears a girdle of animal fir, probably from a bear, making symbolic reference to St. John the Baptist's life in the wilderness of Judea, between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. The elegantly carved robe is a baroque element that adds a sense of motion and energy to the artwork. Originally, the sculpture was polychromed, but the original pigments have weathered away and been replaced with whitewash. Repairs, losses, and insect damage are minor and expected due to great age. many vintage and antique religious sculptures...
