About the Item

This beautifully handcrafted sterling silver mezuzah case was made in Jerusalem in 1950 by the Israeli silversmith Isaac Bier, a known artisan associated with the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts. The piece is marked on the reverse "MADE IN ISRAEL BIER STERLING". The mezuzah case is crafted in a minimalist, modernist style characteristic of mid-20th-century Israeli Judaica. It features a gently hammered texture and a prominent raised stylized Hebrew letter "Shin" (ש) on the front, symbolizing "Shaddai", one of the names of God. The shape is elegantly elongated with rounded ends, designed to be affixed vertically to a doorpost. Two small holes at the top and bottom allow for secure mounting. The silver's patina reflects its age, enhancing its authenticity and character. Measuring approximately the size of a standard mezuzah case, it would have originally housed a small handwritten klaf (parchment scroll) containing the Shema prayer. This mezuzah exemplifies post-independence Israeli craftsmanship, merging tradition with a modern artistic sensibility. Isaac Bier's works are collectible, representing a significant period in Israeli Judaica design.
