19th Century French Louis XVI Carved Painted and Gilt Barometer Thermometer

About the Item

Decorate an entryway or library with this striking antique French barometer and thermometer, crafted circa 1880. Carved in wood and hand-painted in a vivid palette of faux-malachite, gilt, and soft cream, this ornate wall piece combines function and artistry in the Louis XVI style. The upper section features a dual-scale thermometer marked “C.F.” (Celsius/Fahrenheit), framed by laurel leaves and rosettes. Below, the round barometer dial reads in French with weather indications such as “Beau Temps,” “Variable,” and “Pluie,” surrounded by a ring of polished brass and encased in a richly molded and acanthus-carved surround. Floral garlands, a pair of carved birds perched on crossed arrow and torch, ribbon-tied laurel sprays, and classical leaf motifs embellish the sculptural frame, all finished in a patinated turquoise wash and gold leaf that highlight the depth and detail of the carving. The instrument face is signed “Baromètre Holosterique,” referring to the aneroid (mercury-free) barometric mechanism. The tall scientific wall decor is in excellent condition, showing minor wear and flaking consistent with age and use. This elegant meteorological instrument offers both decorative appeal and historical charm. Ideal for a refined traditional interior, it makes a sophisticated focal point over a fireplace, console, or sideboard. 16.75"W x 39.5"H
