About the Item

Antique Gowllands Ophthalmoscope "May's Improved Ophthalmoscope". Wooden box covered with paper. The top is stamped in gold 'MAY'S OPHTHALMOSCOPE'. Inside the box is divided into compartments and covered with purple velvet, the lid is padded and lined with blue fabric. Along the inside edge 'MADE IN ENGLAND'. Inside the handle, in chromed metal which unscrews to hold the batteries. The bulb and instrument are in metal, stamped: 'MAY'S OPHTHALMOSCOPE Improved' and 'Gowwland Made in England'. Ophthalmoscopy examines the back of the eye (fundus), including the retina, optic disc, choroid and blood vessels. William Gowlland and optical instruments: In 1897, at the age of 27, William Gowlland founded a company called William Gowlland Ltd. The business initially operated from premises above a wheelwrights shop in Liverpool Road. In 1908, the company expanded its operations to include exports, marking a period of significant growth. However, in 1916, the company underwent a reorganisation, resulting in the liquidation of William Gowlland Ltd. and the formation of William Gowlland (1916) Limited on 28 March 1917.
